Why Choose IV Rehydration?

Hydrating with IV fluids is fundamentally different than any oral rehydration solution, no matter how packed with “electrolytes” the drink may be. This is because IV therapy uses an IV line to inject intravenous fluids directly into your bloodstream, bypassing major organs that affect how your body uptakes water and sports drinks when you really need a refresher.

Since water is absorbed in the lower GI tract, it can take several hours until your body is actually benefiting from the fluids you ingest by drinking them. With IV hydration, the fluids go directly into your bloodstream, meaning you’ll feel better and be better hydrated instantly.

Who Benefits From Intravenous Fluid Therapy?

IV therapy is most commonly used to treat severe dehydration in clinics and medical centers, although they can have other benefits even when not medically necessary. Rehydration therapy is great for high-performance athletes who want a fast recovery from their exertion, giving their body necessary hydration and nutrients to help their muscles heal and recover quickly.

IV therapies can also help people experiencing fatigue from things like jet lag or at the tail end of an illness that kept them dehydrated, such as the flu.

At AustinMD, our intravenous rehydration therapy includes several minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory components beyond the normal saline solution that can be customized for your specific needs or goals from IV fluid therapy. IV therapy is a straightforward procedure. Regardless of the type of IV therapy you are receiving, you can expect the process to be pretty uniform. The nurse administering the therapy will talk you through the procedure. Generally, you will be seated somewhere comfortable for the duration of the therapy. The nurse will disinfect the injection site and place a needle directly in a vein. The IV will typically be placed in the arm, but it is possible to be placed elsewhere.
The fluids inside an IV bag depend on the type of therapy you are undergoing. Intravenous solutions can contain saline, vitamins, minerals and medication.
So, what is IV therapy used for? Generally, the main types of IV therapy are Hangover relief, Athletic performance recovery, Immune system support, Cold and flu relief, Pregnancy symptom alleviation and Migraine and headache relief
IV therapy drips amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fluids at a controlled rate. Once you are connected to the IV, which is usually a quick and simple process, the duration of the therapy will depend on why you are undergoing IV therapy. This process can take longer, but will typically require 45 minutes to an hour of your time. Some IV therapies can be done relatively quickly, while others will take longer.
How quickly will you feel the effects of the IV drip? Again, the answer depends on why you are undergoing IV therapy. In some cases, you may feel the effects almost immediately. In other cases, it may take more time. The effects can last for up to a few days after completing the procedure, depending on a number of different factors.
