Botox Injections

If you’re looking for a simple, convenient way to eliminate frown lines, crow’s feet, or forehead lines, Botox is a great option that’s available for people in and near Austin.

A small amount of the neuromodulator is injected directly into the underlying muscle, causing it to relax and gradually smooth out the appearance of the underlying skin.

Everyone ages differently, and many people begin to see wrinkles not necessarily when they’re simply resting their expression, but when they’re smiling or frowning. Wrinkles become evident around the eyes and eyebrows earlier than many other facial areas, which can, over time, lead to etched-in lines and wrinkles even at rest. To ease the appearance of these so-called dynamic wrinkles that form when making certain expressions, neuromodulators like Botox can help restore a smooth and youthful appearance to many areas of the face.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable formula with the active ingredient botulinum toxin A, which inhibits nerve signals from reaching muscle tissue in the areas in which it’s injected. This dampens the muscle’s activity, preventing wrinkles from forming on the overlying skin. Botox has been FDA-approved for many uses, including to stop muscle spasms and even to prevent excessive sweating. It’s most well-known, however, for its ability to reduce wrinkles throughout the face.

Who is a Good Candidate For Botox?

Generally healthy adults over the age of 18 are eligible for Botox injections. The best candidate for a neuromodulator treatment is someone who doesn’t smoke, isn’t allergic to the ingredients in Botox, and who has realistic expectations of the results and side effects from the treatment.

Generally, people who are concerned with the look of wrinkles that appear with certain facial expressions, such as severe frown lines, are better suited for neuromodulator treatments as opposed to those who may have issues with fine lines and wrinkles that are always present. For lines and wrinkles that are visible no matter what expression you’re making, dermal fillers might be a better option.

What Areas Can Botox Treat?

Botox is approved by the FDA for several areas of the face, including around the eyes, in the forehead, and between the eyebrows. There are also many “off-label” uses that Botox has been used for treating wrinkles, in addition to these three main uses.

Some doctors use Botox to treat wrinkles in the chin or nose, although these are commonly better served by dermal fillers. A complete list of the services we may be able to offer includes:

  • Botox For Eyes – Wrinkles around the eyes can make you look older or more tired than you actually are. With Botox for under-eye wrinkles, this area smooths out when making facial expressions.
  • Botox for Crow’s Feet – One of the most popular uses of Botox is to eliminate wrinkles at the corners of the eyes, known as crow’s feet, that appear when smiling.
  • Botox for Jowls – Botox injections can help tighten and lift the jaw with a temporary injection treatment.
  • Botox for TMJ – People suffering from migraines, tooth grinding (bruxism), and jaw pain may be able to receive Botox to relax the overactive jaw muscles that cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Botox for Gummy Smile – An overly gummy smile is one that exposes a lot of your upper or lower gumline when smiling. Botox injections can limit your lip movement in a natural-looking way, reducing the appearance of gummy smiles.
  • Botox for Forehead – Forehead lines appear quickly and become etched into your skin as one of the first signs of facial aging. Botox injections in the forehead may be able to slow the appearance of forehead lines with regular treatment.
  • Botox for Eyebrow Lift – With precise injections of Botox around the eyebrow, you can achieve a more contoured eyebrow quickly and simply.

After a consultation, Nurse Crystal will recommend a specific treatment plan for your  concerns that will benefit you the most.

The Botox Process

At our Cedar Park office, Botox begins with a consultation with our talented Nurse Injector, Crystal. After going over your concerns with her, you will receive a quick health assessment to assure you are a good candidate. They will examine your problem areas and review your medical history. They will then recommend a course of treatment that may or may not include Botox.

Our nurse injector will then make precise injections with a tiny needle throughout the treatment area. The procedure is fairly painless and takes less than an hour from arrival to departure.

Botox Results and Recovery

There’s no downtime required after Botox injections, although depending on your specific treatment plan Dr. Roy may require you to avoid substances like caffeine and alcohol for a few days before and after your appointment. Common side effects include redness, swelling, and bruising in the areas of injection, but these will fade within a few days and can be concealed with makeup if desired.

Your results from Botox will become visible over a few days to up to a week following your injections, as the active ingredients settle in and begin working. A typical Botox treatment lasts between three to four months depending on the amount injected and your unique metabolism rate.

The final results usually take 7-14 days, and the effects typically last three to four months. Our goal is to enhance your natural look, and we use FDA-approved products only. We offer Botox to clients from all areas in Austin including Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Leander.

Botox began being used in cosmetic enhancement procedures just after the turn of the 21st century. Dysport is another equally efficacious and safe product, FDA approved 50 years ago. They are both widely used, trusted, and safe neuromodulator injectables used to temporarily stop muscle contractions that cause wrinkles on the face. That said, there are risks when using any type of facial injectable. For example, if a blood vessel in the skin is accidentally pierced, swelling and bruising can occur – although this tends to resolve over time. Patients with egg allergies should not use Botox as it is prepared in an albumin (egg) base, and patients who are allergic to Casein, found in cow’s milk, should not use Dysport.

Yes! Natural facial movement after Botox is recommended as it allows the solution to move to the necessary areas. It improves the effectiveness of the treatment.  Our injector targets the treatments to our patient’s desire.  We always aim to for that natural, rejuvenated appearance, not frozen.

In Your mid 30s: The most appropriate age to start Botox will depend on the skin color and the type of lifestyle (more versus less sun). In general, Caucasian women (who were not lifeguards) usually do best when they start Botox between 35 and 40.
The skin begins to lose volume and thins notably between the ages of 30 to 40. Botox can help prevent deep imprinted lines that we call wrinkles because of the effect of relaxing the muscles that can crease the skin. It can withstand the folding and creasing forces of the underlying muscle.

There are 2 types of dermal fillers most commonly used: Hyaluronic Acid (HA), and non-HA. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in many areas of the body including joints and skin, that can hold 1000x its weight in water. HA fillers help maintain shape, even out depressions in the skin, and provide hydration. They have improved lifting capacity (small amounts are required), improved longevity, and no need for allergy testing. They are also reversible by Hyaluronidase, and are naturally degraded by the body over time.
Aesthetic procedures are not covered under insurance, therefore we do not accept insurance. However, we do offer CareCredit, which is a a great financing option for health and wellness purchases not covered by insurance. With short term financing options of 6, 12, 18 or 24 months, no interest is charged on purchases when you make the minimum monthly payments and pay the full amount due by the end of the promotional period.

The AustinMD skin care is a medical-grade product line, which means that we use the appropriate dose of highly stabilized ingredients that last longer, and take longer to degrade. The cosmetic industry is highly unregulated, so we have no idea if what the label says is truly what’s inside the jar of serum or lotion. Medical companies have invested in clinical research and can prove that their products offer results. We stand behind the products we offer as it reflects on us.

Each appointment starts with a very thorough consultation evaluating your medical history, and muscle movement. At AustinMD, we always take into consideration our patient’s wishes and preferences regarding how much facial movement is desired as well as correction of asymmetries, when possible. Everyone will notice, but no one will know. Schedule your appointment today, you will be glad you did!

To determine a client’s treatment, Dr. Roy and his staff will review your entire medical history. You may want to request copies of your medical files to share with him.

Your medical files and treatments are held in the strictest of confidence; all correspondence is handled through our secure patient portal.
