Many people are hearing about and sharing their great results and experience getting lip fillers for the perfect pout without extensive surgery or need for any downtime. This has led to a huge increase in lip filler procedures over the past few years, allowing people of all ages to rejuvenate and enhance their lips for an ideal, younger-looking appearance.
What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are specific formulations of popular dermal fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane that are designed to feel and look like lip tissue. Depending on the use case and your goals from lip injections, different formulas will provide better results.
Lip fillers are hyaluronic acid-based formulas that draw moisture in great quantities to the treated areas, creating long-lasting, highly natural-looking results so you won’t look over-filled or “worked-on” following your appointment at AustinMD.
Dermal fillers used in the lips typically last between 9 months and a year depending on the patient. This means that, while temporary, they do achieve fairly long-lasting results in well-qualified candidates.
What Formulas Are Used for Lip Fillers?
Depending on your lip condition, age, and desired lip enhancement, we can use several different brands and formulas of dermal filler to create your ideal results. Juvederm Ultra XC and Volbella are both FDA-approved for injection into the lips to treat lines and wrinkles in the lips and around the mouth, as well as for lip augmentation.
Restylane Kysse is Restylane’s preferred lip filler, although previously Restylane Silk has also been used for lip augmentation and wrinkle correction. Silk was the first FDA-approved lip filler and has now been joined by Juvederm’s fillers and updated with the Kysse formula for even more natural-looking lips after injection.
How to Use Lip Fillers
The best way to use dermal fillers for lip enhancement is with a gradual, conservative approach. The last thing we want you to see after a treatment with any dermal filler is that you’ve had work done and therefore don’t look quite like a normal version of you. Still, real results are possible from lip filler for both smoothing away wrinkles as well as enhancing lip volume with a targeted, evenly distributed amount of dermal filler.
For lip augmentation, we turn to our more dense, motion-tested formulas that will hold up to daily wear and tear of lip movement while retaining the feel of natural tissue that makes your lips unique. Augmentation often has the added benefit of smoothing out the surface of the lips, removing any vertical lines or wrinkles that may have appeared with age. However, the goal with augmentation is primarily to enhance the volume of the upper and lower lips and define the boundary of the lip border.
Lip fillers can also be used in even more conservative amounts to smooth out thinning lips or lips that have wrinkles on or around them. This is often used for people who have lost a lot of lip volume with age who have a lower likelihood of looking natural with a lot of filler for lip augmentation. While both lip filler procedures are done in a similar manner and may use the same filler, the goals are distinct and may be better depending on your condition.
